A friend on Twitter asked me for some tips about Detroit since I go there quite often, and I shared a few quick tips (to fit in three short tweets) on things I’d recommend for a person going to the Motor City for the first time.
This isn’t an exhaustive list and only reflects what immediately popped into my head at that time, but wanted to save them somewhere easier to find in case someone else asks again.
Mexicantown in Detroit is amazing. I love stopping at Taqueria el Rey for chicken and tacos after crossing the bridge.
Detroit-style pizza is iconic. I prefer to get mine at Cloverleaf.
The DIA is one of my favorite places in the world. The Rivera murals are breathtaking.
Heidelberg Project is unique and eye-opening. Eastern Market is a feast for the senses. Guardian Building is jaw-dropping.
The BELT (alley) has good public art and a really great public space vibe and has my favorite Detroit bar, Standby, in it.
Downtown has some great public spaces, including Campus Martius Square and down parts of Woodward Ave.
You can’t leave Detroit without eating a coney; Lafayette makes the best ones.
Fave restos include: Lady of the House, Grey Ghost, Mabel Grey, Voyager, Sister Pie, Al-Ameer.
